Panic in Abuja over suspected volcanic eruption

There may have been a volcanic eruption in Mpape area of Abuja, residents fear.

Authorities have reportedly received several distress calls of possible volcanic activity in the area.

The calls forced the minister of solid mineral Abubakar Bawa Bwari, FCT minster counterpart Muhammad Musa Bello, and the director general of the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) Alex Ndubuisi Nwegbu, to visit the area on Tuesday.

Residents were reported to have seen “inflammable substances and smoke” emanating from a hill in the area. A resident reportedly witnessed the incident around 5pm on Tuesday.

Authorities, however, called for calm adding that the affected area would be sealed and investigated.

“This is not the kind of environment where you see volcanic eruption,” NGSA boss Nwegbu said.

The suspected volcanic eruption came days after earth tremors hit several Abuja communities.
