Emperor Ogbonna: Abia lawyer “snatched from prison officials” after court bail

The whereabouts of Abia lawyer Emperor Ogbonna, whom the Federal High Court, Umuahia, granted bail Tuesday afternoon, is presently unknown.

No, Ogbonna did not run away. He was taken into custody by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on the orders of Anthony Agbazuere, a credible source told The Realm News.

Agbazuere is chief of staff to Abia State governor Dr Okezie Ikpeazu.

Charged under a controversial cybercrime law, Barrister Ogbonna had been detained for weeks for allegedly the governor.

After the lawyer was granted bail on Tuesday, Agbazuere reportedly led DSS operatives to arrest him again within the court premises, the barrister’s counsel Ladu Martins told The Realm News. The plan did not work at first but succeed later.

“Agbazuere and the DSS blocked my car from leaving the premises,” Martins said.

“They asked if I was driving Ogbonna out of the court premises and I told them no. Still, they told me to wind down the window so they could take a look inside my vehicle.

“After they realised the Ogbonna was being ferried in the prison’s vehicle as he should, they blocked the prison’s vehicle and told the officials to hand my client over.

“But the prison officials refused because Ogbonna had not met his bail conditions and so should be returned to jail, not to Agbazuere or the DSS,” Martins said.

Another source told us that the chief of staff and the DSS backed down to save face but later arrested Ogbonna again.

“We don’t know where they have taken him. It is shocking how they were able to snatch him from the prison officials,” the source said.
